Yoga practice today

I went to Sunday Mysore class early this morning. It had been two weeks since I practiced.

Two weeks ago, I had what felt like a really good class. But the next day, my knee hurt. Not the joint, but the skin around my knee. I wear a knee brace while I practice. It’s so humid here now. And I sweat during practice. So my knee got all chafed and irritated. It lasted for a week.

Practice was actually pretty good today. I think two weeks is the most I can extend a break before it has serious effects on my ability to enter and sustain poses. A two-week break, however, does effect my mood, my energy, and my mind.

I don’t feel as sharp as I did a couple of months ago when I was meditating and doing Dance of Shiva every day, with two days of yoga per week. My mind was focused and my body was relaxed. That’s not to say that everything was great–the practice can only reveal what is there–but I do find myself totally unfocused at times. I will pull my practice back together.

One thing seems to have benefited from the break. I am better at jumpbacks and jumpthroughs than I have ever been. I even did one today without scraping my foot on my mat on the way back. It must be that I have been tired, and two weeks has given me the recovery I needed. I can’t let it slip. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am.

Plus, I’ve been thinking more and more about becoming a yoga teacher. I love the idea of having a school where people can come and join a community of people all interested in bettering their bodies and minds. I have some ideas for how to structure the school so that happens. But that’s for a different post. And I’m not certified, yet, so that will have to wait.

Certification is an issue. I am not nearly as good at the poses as others in my class. I’ve only been seriously practicing about a year. How long do you need to practice before you are considered teacher material? I’ll have to do more research.
