Meditation: one little thing at a time

I just finished a very fruitful meditation session.

I learned about what I need most right now in my Spanish study: practice speaking in long sentences. The people I talk to try to help me by giving me words and finishing my sentence, but I will never get better if I don’t speak myself. I will have to tell them nicely that I appreciate them helping me, but it is driving my speech into short, choppy sentence fragments. In the long term, that won’t work, even though I get my point across in the short term. I can form very long, complex sentences when I take my time. I must ask for patience.

I also was reminded of what concentration practice is all about. It is easy for me to judge my practice in terms of how many times I was distracted and for how long. But the mark of a good practice is that you sat there and you did it. If there were no distractions, you had nothing to practice. Each distraction is another opportunity to train my mind.
